Life after returning to Croatia
Returning from Germany to Croatia does not mean that every part of the move is finished. After arrival, a new stage begins: everyday life in Croatia needs to be organised while rights, obligations or unresolved matters in Germany may still continue. Health insurance, residence, employment or other income, children's education, vehicles, tax status, banking and pension rights are not necessarily dealt with at the same time or by the same authority.
This section is designed for the first months after returning from Germany to Croatia. The aim is to help you connect your new life in Croatia with matters that may still remain relevant in Germany: establishing your new health insurance status, keeping access to German authorities and records, following outstanding refunds or final statements and protecting rights acquired through years of work in Germany.
What should you check after returning to Croatia?
- I moved between Germany and another country – how do I end or keep my health insurance and avoid double contributions? – particularly important after moving because deregistering your German address does not by itself determine when German health insurance ends or when your new status in Croatia begins;
- Planning retirement or leaving Germany – what should you check? – also useful after the move if German pension rights, tax matters, banking, documents or other issues still need to be managed from Croatia.
After arriving, also review the practical steps in Croatia: your residence status, the basis of your health insurance, employment or self-employment, school or daycare arrangements for children and, where relevant, registration or continued use of a vehicle brought from Germany. With every change of status, it is important to know the exact date from which the new situation applies, because gaps or overlapping obligations are most likely to occur during the transition between two systems.
Do not immediately close every German contact channel or account. A rental deposit refund, final service-charge statement, tax refund, later invoice or correspondence from your Krankenkasse or Deutsche Rentenversicherung may arrive months after you leave. Keep your German records, insurance number, tax ID, old contracts and confirmations, and make sure important German institutions have your current address.
